Typography, Expression, Hierarchy and Composition
Quote exploration
1. We all bleed the same blood. BlackLivesMatter
2. If you have a voice - use it. If you see injustice - tell it.
3. Racism happens all around the world, we are in this together.
4. We can only make a difference if we all stand together. #Bersih
5. No response is a response. And it's a powerful one.
6. Racism isn't born, it's taught!
Chosen Quote
"We can only make a difference if we all stand together. #Bersih"

What is Bersih?
Image and Info from The Straits Times. 2015. What You Need To Know About Malaysia's Bersih Movement. [online] Available at: <https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/se-asia/what-you-need-to-know-about-malaysias-bersih-movement> [Accessed 18 June 2020].
Fig 1.1
Bersih means "clean" in Malay, it refers to the Coalition of Free and Fair Elections. It is a civil society movement consisting of 84 non-government organisations calling for a thorough reform of the electoral process in Malaysia. The image shows a large crowd wearing yellow T-shirts and holding banners in support of the Bersih Movement.

Concept
Raising fist
The raising fist is a symbol of solidarity and support. It is also used as an expression of Unity or strength.
Voices/ Unity
One of the idea I'm trying to show is everyone uniting together. I want to show that there are many little voices behind that big BERSIH word because everyone is uniting together, spreading their voice and also supporting this big event.
Circle
When I look at the circle shape it gives me a feeling of Unity. It doesn't have any sharp points and it goes around. The rounds gives me the feeling of everyone uniting and holding hands in a circle. It is just an impression/ feeling the circle gives me when I look at it.
I've found out that the line is actually more important than the word bersih. The Bersih is just an organisation that support the line. The line is the one that actually represents unity. So I went back to do more exploration for the poster.

Adding background/texture
Fig 1.6
Fig 1.7
At this point I realised I went off topic with the colour and the content of the poster. The content is suppose to be "We can only make a difference if we all stand together. #Bersih".
I've forgotten to add the word bersih into the poster and at the same time the main colour of the Bersih event is yellow. So I changed the background colour to yellow and I've added the word #Bersih.

Animation
For my concept the keyword is Unite. So I wanted to show like the big word together, behind that together there's a lot of different voices from different people and everyone is coming together behind that word.
Animation Concept 1
Fig 1.9
For this design I was inspired by the Apple Device Advertisement that was published in 2017 called "Don't Blink". I feel like instead of just animating the word title itself for my poster, I can try to maybe combine a few composition and showing the many voices concept. This way I feel like there are so many ways where I can show my concept. I tried to show it by using different point sizes, different typeface and even different composition as well.
Animation Concept 2
Fig 1.10
For this concept I wanted it to be a bit more simple. I tried to show the many voices concept by using different typeface for the big word. I was kind of struggling with it because I tried to combine 2 different typeface on one single word so sometimes with the wrong combination it would look unnatural. So I tried to find the best typeface that look great together. For some of the typeface I had to adjust the kerning as well because sometimes it would look very off when I combine 2 typeface together.
I also wanted to make the animation looks smooth when changing fonts. I tried to make sure that it doesn't goes from light then straight to extra bold. I want to make sure the transition goes from thin then slowly thicker and thicker.
Further Background Exploration
Fig 1.11
Fig 1.12
I decided to change the background because in the Bersih event, everyone is wearing yellow shirt for the protest. So I decided to change the background into a yellow shirt texture.

FEEDBACK
Fig 1.17
Feedback from Mr Vinod
The idea of having many voices is good but you must convey this typographically and visually
(using type) Keep the raising fist idea, but look at other ways to express the "many voices".
The many voices is a great idea for your quote, one way is to show the first. But what other ways
can you do this typographically?
Fig 1.18
Give it a tighter kerning and reduce space between sentences by making it all uppercase or lowercase. Also look for alignment points and place info accordingly. Imagine the letters are people and try to get them all closer together so they look like they are uniting.
Fig 1.19
The background doesn't look very fitting. Try to do more exploration on the background. Remember that your line is "We can only make a difference if we all stand together. #Bersih". But I do not see the word #Bersih on your poster.
Fig 1.20
The animation looks more like an ad, it feels very confusing for the reader. Just keep it simple focus on animating the word TOGETHER.
REFLECTION

Mr Vinod gave us a small brief of the project 2b.

Observation
12/6/2020
Mr Vinod showed us some of the design example of the project. After seeing all the example I got very excited for the project and I can't wait to start immediately.
19/6/2020
I saw a lot of other students work and I feel like their work looks really good. I feel like I'm falling behind and I'm not satisfied with my work. So it really motivate me and I can't wait to start working and improve my work after hearing the feedback.
26/6/2020
I was quite happy with how my poster looks. Now I have to start animating it and I got very worried because I wasn't sure how can I animate it to represent the word Unite.
3/7/2020
I'm quite happy with both of my animations. I feel like concept 1 is a very interesting way to show my concept. Instead of animating the text in the poster, I used different composition in a sequence to show it. The second concept is more simple but it really represent the many voices concept well.
Finding
12/6/2020
Honestly I was very nervous about this project. One of the reason is I really want to do it well and produce a beautiful, meaningful design. But I was worried that what if I did poorly on this. In the end, I just decide to stop thinking negatively and just do it.
19/6/2020
I find this project very fun. Even though I'm quite nervous about the animation part but at the same time I'm quite excited about it.
26/6/2020
I find the animation part very hard. I wasn't sure how can I animate the text to represent the many voices concept.
3/7/2020
I am very happy with my animations I feel like it looks simple but it really represent the many voices idea.
