Lecture

29-5-2020 / week 7

In week 7 lecture, we had learned the following things.

- Understanding Letterforms ( the details in each letterform )
- The strokes of the letters
- Maintaining the X-height
- Form and Counter form (the negative space outside the letterform)
- Design principles such as Contrast

Mr Vinod gave us a brief on project 2 and he taught us what are some of the general terms of the line. For example: Cap Height, x-height, baseline etc...

We did some practises on how to analyse a Font and we also did a few sketches on the idea we have.

5-6-2020 / week 8

In this lecture, Mr Vinod demonstrated to us how to generate fonts with the software called FontLab. We also had a small consultation on our progress with the Project 2a Font Design.

Sketches

I wasn't really happy with the sketches I did during class so I decide to redo some of the concept

Digital Version

These are not the finalised concept yet I'm just trying to see how it would look in digital version. After this progress I would choose 1 out of 3 of them to finalised. After choosing one concept I will start to focus more on it and see is there any letters that doesn't fit and need improvement.

Improvement

Generating Font

Fig 2.7

After finishing designing the font in Illustrator then it's time to generate the font with FontLab. It was my first time using FontLab so it was very confusing for me. So I had to keep rewatching the tutorial video to do it.

Poster Exploration

Fig 2.9

Fig 2.10

I showed my lecturer the explorations, he mentioned that the type is a bit too small, it need to be bigger and more presence on the page. So I went back to improve the poster. The T looked interesting but it doesn't fit well with the other letters. So I decided to just use the original Futura Light fonts, it looks more simple and tidy than the explorations I did.

FEEDBACK

Fig 2.12

Feedback from lecturer

For your sketches, the 4th idea needs a lot of work still but it looks interesting. Do make sure the measurement of the letters are correct, for your second ideas the stroke of the h is too thick.

Be sure to use up the space, don't make the text too small. It need to be bigger, you need more presence on the page. The T doesn't look right with the rest of the letters as well.

Final Feedback

The D and M looks good, but the Y looks a little bit tall. Maybe if you align the Y with the E it will look better.

REFLECTION

Experience

29/5/2020

During lecture, Mr Vinod demonstrated to us how to analysis the letterform and also the measurements for the frame.

5/6/2020

Mr Vinod showed us how to generate fonts with the FontLab software. We also had a small consultation for our progress on Project 2a Font Design.

Observation

29/5/2020

I'm still surprise at how some of the letters are actually not symmetrical. I did not know there was this much details that goes into fonts, I definitely feel more appreciate for the fonts after the class is over.

5/6/2020

It feels amazing when you can actually use the font you design. It just feels great seeing your design becoming a real font that you can use.

Finding

29/5/2020

Mr Vinod teach quite fast it was a bit hard for me to catch up so that is something I really have to improve on.

5/6/2020

I am very not used to using FontLab it's my first time using it. So it was very confusing and I had to keep rewatching the tutorial video.
