Lecture
22-5-2020 / week 6
29-5-2020 / week 7
In week 7 lecture, we had learned the following things.
- Understanding Letterforms ( the details in each letterform )
- The strokes of the letters
- Maintaining the X-height
- Form and Counter form (the negative space outside the letterform)
- Design principles such as Contrast
Project 1 Text Formatting and Expression
In this project you will be asked to express typographically the content in the link provided in a
2-page editorial spread. No images are allowed. However some very minor graphical elements,
i.e. line, shade, etc. might be allowed.
Editorial text options
Headline 1: The impact of Bauhaus on modern culture
Headline 2: A Designer's Code of Ethics
Headline 3: First Things First Manifesto 2000
Headline chosen
Headline 2: A Designer's Code of Ethics
Rough Layout
Sketches
Fig 1 Fig 1.1
Fig 1.2
I like to start drawing the layout using on the rectangles instead of the text. I feel like each words have a lot of details such as strokes, line etc... So I always just use a rectangle to plan the layout and then I would look at it as like a geometry art. Most of the time I would focus on the negative space because I feel like it is very important and I really like to leave out a lot of negative space sometimes. The reason I did not use the rectangle for all of the sketches is because after the first page I ran out of ink and I do not have enough pen so in the middle of the sketches. I've change it back to drawing the words and try to save as much ink as possible because it was hard to buy pen with MCO happening.
Headline Ideas
Fig 1.3
Before I start to draw out ideas, I was looking at the headline to see which word can I focus on to make an expression. I decided to focus on the word "Code" as something like coding. I went to researching a bit about coding and I've found out that when people do coding, most of the time the screen background is black colour so I decided to apply it to both headlines and layout of the spread. Some other things I've found out are a lot of the times the text in coding seems to be to be Sans-Serif, so the type families I've decided to experiment with are:
- Univers LT Std
- Futura Std

After having a small consultation with my lecturer. I went back to work and improve on the headlines and the overall layout. I tried to explore more ideas and play around with it.

The last paragraph layout looks weird so I tried to experiment with the layout of it to see how can I make it look more natural and not out of place.

Sometimes I feel like the group of text have too many strokes and details so I like to replace it with dark rectangles instead and look at it like a geometric art. It kind of helps me to see if the overall layout is balance or not, and it also helps me see did I use enough negative space as well.

FEEDBACK
First Feedback from Mr Vinod
The editorial layout is adequate (on the face of it) but is not, in it's present form, exciting. The idea underpinning it seems sound (expression) but does not; command presence or has cause visual impact. So some amount of permutations/explorations may be necessary. What is good as far as I can see is correlation between point-size-leading and line-length AND para spacing and leading to obtain cross alignment in the text.
You're on the right track as of now, you do seem to have passed the task, should you wish to score, you will need to push on further.
Second Feedback from Mr Vinod
Make sure your e-portfolio format is correct, the feedback should be placed at the end of your work just before the reflection section. Also sure you embed your final pdf with the caption "final submission".
REFLECTION
Experience

We had our consultation for project 1 word formatting29/5/2020
During lecture, Mr Vinod demonstrated to us how to analysis the letterform and also the measurements for the frame.
Observation
22/5/2020
looking at all the other classmates work made me feel like wow I'm quite far behind their work looks amazing. It kind of motivates me wanting to do more better and create better design.29/5/2020
I'm still surprise at how some of the letters are actually not symmetrical. I did not know there was this much details that goes into fonts, I definitely feel more appreciate for the fonts after the class is over.Finding

I really enjoyed doing the word formatting task. It was really fun and I've learned a lot of things such as the leading, layout etc...29/5/2020
Mr Vinod teach quite fast it was a bit hard for me to catch up so that is something I really have to improve on.
