Exercises

Exercise 1 - Box Making

You are required to choose 2 loose items. The size of the items should not be larger than 300mm. You need to design a box for each item. Consider the purpose of packaging when designing the box.

I've always been really terrible at sketching, so even right now I am already struggling a bit trying to make sure my sketches are clear and easy to understand. After explaining all the ideas of the box to the lecturer he had suggested me to go with idea 2, which is a box that functions the same way as color pencils where you can pull the slider out.

The idea I really wanted to choose is idea 4 which is a box that follows the same shape as the product which is a half oval shape of the cup. But I was really struggling which trying to think how can it be open, I was thinking it can be like how jewelry boxes work where you can flip open the lid but I am not confident if I can execute that idea perfectly when I am making the box.

In the end I tried to challenge myself and chose idea 4.

Card Design Exercise

Design a playing card box with different design style. You can choose 1 of the style and apply it into your box and playing card design. Please follow the standard size of a normal playing card.

Design Style:
  • Vintage
  • Minimalist
  • Retro
  • Contemporary
  • Typography

Visual Reference

I love grunge typography and I am a fan of Grunge designers such as David Carson, Chris Ashworth etc. I used to love to do simple minimalistic design but I'm starting to experiment with expressive type. I feel like I have never seen a playing card designs that focuses on grunge and pure typography style so I feel like it would be interesting to look into the 1990s where grunge typography was very popular.

Layout Reference

I didn't really want to follow the standard playing cards layout which is symbols in the middle the numbers on the corner. I feel like it's so overdone and kind of boring so I want to create different layout composition for each different card so they each have their own characteristic. This feels very risky but I feel like if I can execute this idea well it would be an amazing work so I decided to just go crazy.

Cover Design Draft

I designed a few different covers that have different themes. Some of the themes are more focus on the texture, some combines images with typography to create like a collage feel to it. In the end I decides to focus more on expressive typography with slight distortion to the letters and experimenting with overlaying and combining fonts and point sizes.

At first I wanted to just use completely pure typography for the design but I was struggling with trying to work on the symbol like hearts, diamonds with typography. So I decided to use the normal symbol but apply slight distortion to it.
