Reflection on FLIP
Week 1/ Types of Infographics
Honestly I was still very confuse with what's Information Design, I wasn't sure what does it do. So being chosen to be the group to present this really helped me because we did a lot of research to present this FLIP topic and it kind of helped introduce me to this module and help me get prepared.
Week 2/ Saul Wurman's LATCH
After knowing this it kind of made me appreciate more on my surroundings. To me I don't really know much about theory stuff when I design things it's all just base on my feelings. But knowing the LATCH theory it kind of just reminds me that there are so many things in the world that we just didn't notice. Not just things behind design, but pretty much everything. There are so many thoughts and considerations that goes behind everything that I think I tend to not notice.
Week 3/ Miller's Law Chunking
It's definitely very helpful to learn these, for me I always just design things base on how I feel. I didn't really have a proper working flow and efficient way of working I just do it. So it's great to learn how to have a more efficient and proper approach when designing things and organising information. It also made me realised that Chunking is being used everywhere, like video games, mobile apps etc. It made me start paying attention to everyday stuff, now when I look at certain things I start to analyse the layout, how was it done and what are the intentions behind it.
Week 4/ Manuel Lima's 9 Directives Manifesto
After this lecture I started questioning all the posters I made for myself because all of it was heavily focused on the aesthetic and texture. I started asking whether if my posters tells any story or is it actually legible,
After Effect Exercise
Exercise 1
Quantifiable Information
Quantify raw data and visualise information as photography
Collecting/ Organising data
Fig 1
I decided to use origami starts for this exercise. It's all the same sizes so the only thing I would be able to categorised is the colours and the amount of stars each color have.
Sketches
Fig 2
I really like minimalistic typography and sometimes I like to have lot's of negative space. So I was treating this as if I'm doing a typography poster and I try to focus on the alignments.
Exploration
Fig 3
Fig 3.1
Fig 3.2
Fig 3.4
I decided to redo everything and not use any of these because it feels unrelated to the theme. It looks too clean and minimal but the object I am using are colourful starts so it should be more engaging. So I decided to put them in a proper context, since they are starts why don't I draw a sky and use them as stars.
Second exploration
Fig 4
Fig 5
I was really struggling with this exercise because I just couldn't find a way to present them in an interesting way. I didn't really want to use graphs or anything because I feel like I can do better than that but I just couldn't find a way to do it. I decided to use Fig 4 as my final submission because the context is appropriate. Using paper stars as actual starts, Fig 5 is a little interesting but it just feels plain and Fig 4 was better in terms of context.
Final Submission
Exercise 2
L.A.T.C.H
Present informations according to the L.A.T.C.H principles.
Progress
Same as the previous exercise, I really struggled a lot for this exercise because I just don't know how to present them in an interesting way. I am insanely terrible at drawing and illustrating so I always relies on images, texture, typography. I try to find graphics and elements that can be use for free.
