Project 2

Key artwork

Explore the use of typeface in your area of interest, understand its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon, explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the existing typeface.
To be effective you will need to study your area of interest, look at how type is used in the area and identify potential weaknesses or possible areas of further exploration. You can then attempt to provide a creative solution or add value to an existing use.

The end outcome could be a designed font and its application in the form or format that it is intending to provide a solution for, or an exploratory process that solves a problem or adds value to an existing use. The work can manifest into any kind of format related to the issue being solved or explored: animation, 3d, print, ambient, projection, movie title or game title, use of different material etc.

Proposal

Fig 1

For this project I decided to use the fonts I had developed for one of the exercises because I think it does gives kind of a nuclear feeling to it. The thick bold shapes and the gaps do kind of reminds me of the nuclear symbol so I decided to finish working on this font.

Fonts developing process

Fig 1.1

I did not start working on the fonts with grids because I feel like it would be too time consuming. So I decided to just roughly work on how each letters would look like, get the concept consistent then I will only start refining each letters. At first I just wanted to work on the capital letters but my lecturer suggested me to try to finish all the letters even small letters. Then I think why not treat this as a valuable opportunity to really develop a fonts of my own so I decided finish this whole fonts.

Refined version

Fig 1.2

After finish refining each letters, now I have to work on the posters and collateral for the project.

Posters exploration

Fig 1.3

I was really struggling with the posters because I'm working on a poster that is based on a video game, most video game posters uses illustration and it is quite rare pure typography poster for video. I was struggling with trying to express the video game using only typography. The only idea I though works was having rough textures on the poster to simulate the nuclear war world. I was focusing on finding some textures for the poster that could kind of gives the feeling of war, rough world etc.

Mockups

Fig 1.4

For the mockups, the video game Fallout sell these "Power Armour Edition" with items and props that is related to the game. For example a duffle bag, Helmet etc. So I think it would be a really good idea to follow this theme. On fig 1.4 is the actual poster that is used to advertise this package, I decided to take this poster and change it to my font instead to see how it would fit. honestly I think it fits pretty well, but I think it lacks texture. It kind of needs some roughness to resemble the nuclear theme.

Mockups 2

Fig 1.5

I decided to use one of the items from the "Power Armour Edition" which is the duffle bag because it feel like the aesthetic and the color of the bag does kind of likes some bag that is used during war. I also had chose to work on this giant watch called "PIP BOY" which can be found in the actual game itself, I feel like maybe I can use this font not just on the real world, but maybe it can be used in the video game as well. So maybe some of the banner is in that font, there's these giant bunker in the game so I thought it would be a great idea to use the font on the entrance of the bunker. Kind of something like how people would hand paint the letters onto a ship.

Mockups second attempt

Fig 1.6

I decided to change some of the mockups because I feel like I went too deep into the video game item concept. I think it may confuse people who are not as familiar to the game so I decided to change some of the mockups into more familiar objects that at the same time still feels relevant to the subject. The previous blue video game cover does not feel suitable for the game's color scheme so I had change the cover into more older disc cover.

For the previous bunker door I think it was not really working so I change it into something that feels similar to the nuclear theme which is a science lab. I was imagining that it can be a very bold text displayed on the door or it can also have a bold rectangle background. The poster I did for the video game was also inspired by the door of the science lab. Sometimes in a science lab in movie there's these bold rectangle with bold letters on the door to label the room. Something like the image below,

FEEDBACK

Week 10

1)The gap in between each letters need to be more consistent
2)Try to develop the font in a grid system 3)J is interesting but hard to read 4)The B may be hard to read, you can try to exaggerate the dent more 5)Overall on the right track, maybe after finishing the caps you can try to work on small letters as well

Week 11

The overall concept seems to be going in the right direction, after you are done with all the letter you should start refining each letters.

Week 12

1)The lower case letters (p, q, y,) should be on the X height. 2) For the lower case letters (h, t, f etc.) is on the cap height but it should be on the ascender height 3)Start thinking about what you want to do for the collateral

Week 13

Poster -The third and fourth poster looks like it's on the right track. The illustration doesn't always have to be very big, you can add the illustrations you made on poster 2 into poster 3 and 4. Collateral -The blue PS4 cover looks terrible, the color does not match with the game concept. -The text on the bunker door for the 4th collateral should be bigger. The purpose of the collateral is to showcase the font so it shouldn't be too small. -The poster for the "Power Armour" poster doesn't look so great. It feels like all items are photoshop together. You can try to create a small poster, but only showcasing one item each and it can become a poster series.

Observation

28/10/2020

I feel very nervous for this project because lot's of people already got an idea of what they are going to do and I'm still considering about the ideas I've proposed.

4/11/2020

We had a feedback session for our project 1a

11/11/2020

I made a basic typography error which is for the lower case letters such as f, h etc it should be touching the ascender height but it was touching the cap height. I really have to pay more attention to these tiny details.

18/11/2020

It's very near to the end of the semester, I just have to push a little bit more.

Finding

28/10/2020

-

4/11/2020

I was very worried and struggling with the letters, then when I ask my lecturers about some letters looking weird he said it looks okay. Which kind of surprise me and I think I'm just overthinking too much about it.

11/11/2020

I'm worried about the collaterals for this font because it is going to be use for a video game. Usually posters for video game would rely on illustrations and there wasn't really much fully typography base video game poster. I find it difficult to express the video game with just pure typography.

18/11/2020

My collateral was not looking good but it's fine because I think I can do this. I can make it better and I have enough time to.
