Lecture

16-9-2020/ Week 4 Public Holiday, Feedback

It's public holiday so we didn't have any class but we had a small feedback session.

Feedback session for project 1b

14/10/2020

It was independent learning week and our lecturer have to attend a workshop so we didn't have any actual feedback session. But we posted our work into the Facebook group and we've received a very small general feedback.

21/10/2020

We had our last final feedback for project 1b and some of us had shown our ideas for project 2.

Project 1B

Key artwork

Students are tasked to design a poster and two other collateral items of their choosing, using the key artwork developed in the task before this. Students will work on the poster first and fine-tune the outcomes before going on to complete the other collateral material. The graphic output must result from in-depth exploration and must communicate both visually and textually the desired message and mood.

Collateral: once the key artwork (typographic title possibly infused with a visual element) has been developed, the artwork is then expanded into several iterations that are then applied across the various collateral (applications/promotional material): Poster (Static 50 x 70cm), Invite (interactive), T-Shirt, Sticker, Pin Badge, etc.

Poster design process

When I was working on the posters, I tried to design it in a way where it can work as a key artwork and be used over and over again with different image. I want to focus on trying to makes the key artwork connects with the content. For example like the images shown above.

Poster exploration

Fig 1.2

After designing a few different option I starts filtering it and choose which one that I think have the most potential to work with. I realise that the key artwork is actually bold and thick enough to a point where maybe I can actually fit an images in it. I also had an idea where I can create a gif with the same poster but lot's of different images in it. So maybe if it's a conference and there will be people doing public speaking I can have all their faces in the key artwork. That way it can really work as a main icon for the event and it can be very flexible to work with as well.

Fig 1.3

You can see how I try to experiment with my poster key artwork by using different images to see how would the key artwork work. I really like the first idea with the colour of the key artwork. It's strong but it will not overpower the images. But I'm not sure if it's the best option for this event because it kind of looks like one of a page from a magazine. It does not remind me of a poster.

Whereas the second idea, it looks more simple. I love the amount of negative space and this idea actually looks like a legit poster to me. So I decided to work on the gif with this idea to see how does it look like and if it's able to be use over and over again with different content.

Animation Gif

First attempt

Fig 1.4

I really like this idea and it seems like it is very flexible to work as a main icon for the event. I also tried to have the images on the outside of the key artwork but I feel like the white is just too bold and strong it overpowers the images at the back and the content. So I think maybe I should just stay with the first idea where I have the images in the logo. It's more subtle and it won't overpower the overall content on the poster.

Animation Gif

Second attempt

Fig 1.5

The background was suppose to be full white but when I insert the gif into the blogger I suddenly notice there's this weird grey line at the background. But when I went back to check the actual gif file and photoshop there line isn't there. So I decided to convert it into mp4 instead.

Mp4 version

Fig 1.6

I realised size of the animated invite wrong. It's suppose to be 1000px by 1000px and I am really beating myself up for making such as basic mistakes. The text also seems to be too small to read and I did not realised until the lecturer reminded me. These are literally the simple basics that shouldn't get wrong and I should have been more careful.

Mockups

When I was working on these mockups I tried to find things that are related to an event, my first thought was when you go to an event sometimes they gives you these free bags with t-shirt, pen, notebook etc. So I was focusing on these items except t-shirt because it's just too common, there's not much special feeling a t-shirt gives.

I also focused on billboard because I think it would really fits the theme, it feels very appropriate to the context, very modern and very clean as well.

Fig 1.10

Fig 1.11

I decided to not use fig 1.8 and fig 1.11 because for the hat it just doesn't feel necessary to have that, I like to just keep it simple and I think just having the key artwork is good enough. For fig 1.11 it looks too high class and it doesn't really fits with the theme of the event which is "The abcs of Bauhaus Design Theory".

FEEDBACK

Week 7

  • The second layout looks more interesting, whereas your first layout you just had all the content in one column
  • The content on the bottom right is too big, so make sure you adjust it
  • Remember sometimes you can't have the numbers the same point size as the text, sometimes it may seem too big so you will have to adjust the sizes of the numbers
  • You've used the wrong dash, the one you are using is hyphen but what you should be using is EN Dash
  • Make sure you use grids for the posters

Week 8

  • The sizes of your animation invite is wrong. It should be 1000px by 1000px.
  • Make sure you check your work with your phone as well to make sure you are able to read the text from other devices.

Week 9

  • good job for your mockups, collateral item showcases good imagination
  • Animation is okay, try to be more creative with how you display the content

REFLECTION

Experience

23/9/2020

We had a feedback session for our project 1a

30/9/2020

We had a feedback session for our project 1a

7/10/2020

We had a feedback session for our project 1b poster

14/10/2020

It was independent learning week and our lecturer have to attend a workshop so we didn't have any actual feedback session. But we posted our work into the Facebook group and we've received a very small general feedback.

21/10/2020

We had a final feedback for our project 1b and after that day we have to start project 2

Observation

23/9/2020

Some of the key artwork our lecturer had shown as example are so interesting in my opinion. It's so simple but the way they were able to just keep reusing the same key artwork in all kinds of poster with different context were so well done.

30/9/2020

I was so excited for this project because I love working on branding and this kind of feels like a branding project. Being able to see your design in mockups and real life example just feels so satisfying.

7/10/2020

After receiving feedbacks from the lecturer, I realised that I am not really using what I've learn from the previous semester. I made a lot of basic typographic mistakes in my posters.

14/10/2020

I've made one of the most basic mistake ever which is I got the sizes for the invite video wrong. That is like the most basic thing and I really shouldn't have got it wrong.

21/10/2020

I really love some of my classmate's animated invite, it looks so good and I really wish I could do that as well. But unfortunately I don't know anything about motion design and kinetic typography. All the animations I've done are in photoshop.

Finding

23/9/2020

I always wonder sometimes what are key artworks called because a lot of times I see illustration being use as a logo but it's not really a logo. I did not know there is such thing as a key artwork so I guess I'm just happy that I finally know what it's called.

30/9/2020

I think what really helps me when I am working on the key artwork is to design it as if it is a logo. A logo should be simple so it can work in any sizes and work on any items. That is why I tried to make my key artwork as simple as possible so even if I scale it down I will still be able to see the overall key artwork.

7/10/2020

I was quite disappointed in myself because I made a lot of basic typography mistakes. Those are the basics I've learned and I should not be making any mistake at all.

14/10/2020

I seem to be on track for the project and I felt relieve and happy but at the same time I have to stay focus and not make any mistake. Especially basic stuff like getting the size wrong or basic typography error.

21/10/2020

After seeing some of the beautiful animated invite by my classmate, it really motivates me to try to do better, I had made a decision that when this semester is over, I will spend my off semester times learning kinetic typography and then practise making animated poster. I'll also make sure I practise using after effect and stop using photoshop for animation.
