Lecture

16-9-2020/ Week 4 Public Holiday, Feedback

It's public holiday so we didn't have any class but we had a small feedback session.

Project 1A

Key artwork

Students are tasked to creatively and conceptually use visual and type in combination to create a key artwork to be used in collateral for the subsequent task down the line (*collateral design). The focus here is to use visual elements, and or graphical elements and the title (type) in an experimentive, impactful and visually attractive manner. The use of imagery must be, to a degree, subservient or of similar importance, with the title (in terms of visual hierarchy). Students need to generate a wide range of possibilities and document their progression leading to the final key artwork.

Chosen subject

The ABCs of Bauhaus design theory

I chose the subject "The ABCs of Bauhaus design theory because for this project, I've decided to challenge myself to design using very only simple shapes and try to make the design as simple as possible. So before I start designing, I went to do some research about Paul Rand's poster, I love his posters because he just uses simple shapes and colour scheme and it always works so well. His posters aren't like the typical design trends that just comes and go, his posters still seems relevant and great nowadays even though it has been so long.

I've also went to watch some video about Paul Rand to try to understand his thinking process and how he sees design. I am not really a book reader so I always spend my time watching videos to learn instead. There's this youtube channel called "The Futur," which I really recommend everyone to watch. because it is such a great channel to watch if you want to learn about design. I always spent most of my free time watching their videos and I feel like I've learned so much about typography and design principles just by watching them.

First design exploration

After receiving some feedback from my lecturer, I realised that I didn't really understand about key artwork at all. I though it was kind of the same concept as posters but I was wrong. So I went back and made some adjustments to the key artwork I've made.

Second Exploration

Key artwork testing

Fig 1

In here I've scale down all the key artwork to look at them on a very small scale. I'm treating it as a logo and I want to make sure it looks simple enough so that people would still be able to recognise it when they look at it. These key artwork should work just like a "slap on logo".

A "slap on logo" are logo design that are functional and flexible that it can work on any sizes, and would look great when placing it on a hat, a bag, T-shirt etc.

Fig 1.1

I like this design because I really like how it's just made with really simple shapes. It's simple enough and it is easy for people to recognise. It is also very functional because it can work in any sizes. Even if it is in a very small scale people would still be able to see it clearly. Which makes it a very flexible key artwork, I would be able to put it on a bag, a card etc.

At first both of the circle for the B were equal sizes but I feel like it can be improve. So I've decided to try to use the golden ratio to help me get the proportion right. But in the end the colour of the shapes touching each other feels weird. I think the colour looks kind of off when I look at it in a small scale. So I went to explore again.

Final exploration

I decided to go with the red B because it feels more functional than the first one. It's not too complicated and the simple bold shapes is good enough to recognise even when applying it at a very small scale. It looks more flexible and the simple bold B is quite thick, maybe if I'm doing a poster series to advertise this event I can even apply some images into the key artwork as a small animated gif.

FEEDBACK

Week 5

Fig 5

General Feedback

-When you design a key artwork, you have to make sure it works in black and white first.

-Make sure you study the subject you are working on.

Specific Feedback

-This seems to the best among all the other variation. Instead of doing all the letter you can try to use the B only. The B looks good enough to be a key artwork.

-There's a typo error, it should be BAUHAUS, not BAHAUS. You are missing the U.
