All the images above are taken from a song lyrics video called "Bloody Valentine" by MGK(Machine Gun Kelly). This is one of my most favourite song ever and I really loved the Punk Art style in the lyrics video. I felt very inspired to create a work that have the similar aesthetic as the lyrics video but I wasn't confident enough to try something new.

When I saw the exercises content title "Punk Influence on Design", I got super excited and I feel like this video would just be perfect for me to observe how does Punk Style Graphic Design look like. So I went back and rewatch the lyrics video over and over again.

I also felt that I had been restricting myself too much to not try anything new on the previous semester. I always went for what I think is the safest option and I don't allow myself to try something I never done before. So for this exercises I decided to have a few poster work where I just embrace myself and try out new things. For example: using a very strong colour, have only the same pt size for the whole poster, focus on having a lot of negative space etc...

Exercise 2a / Type and Play

Part 1

Student will be asked to make a selection of image between man made objects (chair , glass etc.) r structures (buildings), and nature (Human, landscape, leaf, plant, bush, river etc).

Student will analyse, dissect and identify potential letterforms within the dissected image. The form will be explored and ultimately digitised.

Exercise 2b/ Type & Image

An image of a man-made structure or object, and nature will be combined with a letter/word/sentence. The objective is to enhance/support the interplay between the letter/word/sentence and the selected image. The text must be woven into a symbiotic relationship with the image.

FEEDBACK

Week 2

General Feedback
  • Do not have too much non-objective elements
  • Focus on the hierarchy while arranging the information

Specific Feedback
  • Axial= The way the information is place makes the overall layout looks unbalance. It's all jammed up into one corner. Try to move it around and give the overall layout more balance.
  • Dilatational= It looks too small and it doesn't really seem to be connecting to each other. The reading movement is not really smooth.
  • Random= It looks too small and it doesn't really seem to be connecting to each other. The reading movement is not really smooth.
  • Modular= The title "All Riped Up" went off grid. Adjust it and make it stay within the grid.
  • Transitional= There is too much gap between the informations and the information looks too clump up. The reading movement in the poster doesn't seems efficient.

Week 3

Specific feedback

The second idea seems to be more consistent than the first origami idea. But do make sure the gap in between the letter isn't too big or too small. And make sure all the gaps are consistent.

Week 4

FALL -The color of the text seems to be too strong and it's shouting for attention. The texture on the poster also doesn't really work well with the image itself. DROWN -It's okay DROWN 2 -It looks really interesting and bluring out some of the letter is a great idea. But the text still looks a bit harsh, maybe you can add some gradient or water drops effect on the text. Stay Curious -The text doesn't really fit well with the image, it doesn't really look relevant.

REFLECTION

Experience

26/8/2020

We had a small brief on the upcoming exercises/ Projects, we also learned the 8 Typographic System.

2/9/2020

We had a feedback session for the typographic system posters we did.

9/9/2020

We had a feedback session for exercise 2a Type & Play.

16/9/2020

It was public holiday but we had a small feedback session for exercise 2b.

Observation

26/8/2020

It was interesting to understand that there's 8 type of typographic system. I didn't really know they exist at first I though it was just trying different composition. I did not realise that there is a system, it's definitely really helpful to learn these system.

2/9/2020

I saw a lot of other people's work and their work looks really great. So it really motivates and push me to try to be better and work harder.

9/9/2020

This was a really fun exercise, it was very hard to observe and find out the letterforms in nature but I feel like once you found it, the process will start to get easier. It's still tough, but as you do more and more it would be better.

16/9/2020

It was public holiday but we had a small feedback session for exercise 2b.

Finding

26/8/2020

When I saw the upcoming exercises and projects I got very excited and I can't wait to start working again.

2/9/2020

I was very disappointed with my work, I feel like I did really badly for some of the posters and it really reminds me that I have to practise way more than I'm currently doing now.

9/9/2020

I am really happy with the font I've made for exercise 2a. It wasn't as unique as other students work but I really like that it's simple and bold. It also inspired me to design a new logo for my Instagram design account. I was having some trouble with my previous logo and this exercise really helped me.

16/9/2020

It was public holiday but we had a small feedback session for exercise 2b.
